How might we transform our use of time during the school day to make more room for collaborative and individualized teaching and learning?
Throughout the 2016-2017 academic year, Leadership+Design is working with Hillbrook School to reimagine the JK-8 school's academic schedule in order to better match their priorities of fostering collaborative connections between teachers, and creating opportunities for students to have greater control over their own learning experiences. In June of 2016, faculty members reflected on their own journey through the current schedule and engaged in question-storming to anticipate both the challenges and opportunities inherent in redesigning the school's use of time. This fall, several faculty and staff members each shadowed a student for a full school day, digging deep into the student experience of a day at Hillbrook. They then shared their observations with the larger faculty, who collectively designed creative solutions for meeting some of the needs of Hillbrook students. In the winter and spring, L+D will help Hillbrook develop a prototype of a new schedule that the school will test for a couple of weeks to observe what works and what can be improved. By summer 2016, we will emerge with a new schedule built out of careful empathy work and need finding, to be implemented in the fall of 2017.
