Leadership+Design Summer for educators is the ultimate hands-on learning laboratory for adult learners who want to develop expertise in design thinking and 21st Century pedagogies. and practice guiding students to create design inspired solutions to a real-world problem.
Leadership+Design Summer for Educators is a high-touch, hands-on professional development opportunity for a select group of innovative educators leading design thinking initiatives at their schools. Throughout the experience, teachers receive instruction and hands-on practice in developing an inquiry-driven, student-centered program that fosters the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
Leadership+Design Summer has a unique structure where teachers practice new ways of teaching with groups of students in a coached, supported environment. Once students leave, we help you bring it back to your school – and we follow up with you throughout the school year to support the process of change. In other words, Leadership+Design Summer is more than a summer program – it’s experiential, project-based learning for educators.
Learn Design Thinking
In a two-day, cohort based workshop, 5-7 teachers immerse themselves in learning the design thinking methodolgy - the habits, skillsets and mindsets that designers use to create innovative solutions and products.
Students arrive and are given a real-world challenge to solve. Teachers serve as guides and mentors to students as they conduct empathy research, define problems and ideate and prototype solutions
Let Students Shine
Finally, students present their ideas to a panel of industry experts. Teachers stand back as the students shine.

Why Leadership+Design? The world is changing rapidly. It's grappling with ambiguous, complex problems. Our organization is called "Leadership+Design" because we believe the school of the future should prepare leaders who can learn, unlearn, and relearn - who can think creatively, collaborate with others, and adapt to feedback.
In this world, developing young leaders means going beyond test scores. It means giving students real world problems - and the tools to create solutions that never existed before.
Leadership+Design Summer is our lab school.
We are currently recruiting a select cohort - ten educators (5 per site) - to receive formal instruction, coaching, and hands-on experience with our methods at Leadership+Design Summer.
Before students ever arrive, Leadership+Design mentors spend time getting ready, through readings, an on-line cohort meeting, and live, teacher-only professional development.
The goal of this training is to introduce the tools and frameworks that will be used with students - and give teachers their own experience of following a design process.
Core concepts include:
A 21st Century Laboratory School: After initial training, you'll be paired with a manageable group of five students to guide them through the design process. While Leadership+Design facilitators and guest experts will set up each part of the process, you'll experience what it's like to work through the process with students - you'll see how exercises really work, where students feel stuck or move forward.
You'll hear guest lectures from visiting designers, engineers, and other creatives - and benefit from the coaching of guest innovators who visit groups each day, offering expert feedback and perspectives.
Along the way, you'll get in-the-moment coaching and support from Leadership+Design teacher trainers. Each day ends with a cohort debrief and reflection on the connection between theory and practice.
The following schedule provides a general framework for the program.
Day 1: Design Thinking Educators come together as a cohort to learn the basics of the design thinking approach to problem-solving, then put it into action by tackling a problem as a team.
Day 2: Group Dynamics Educators learn about group dynamics, the challenges of collaborative work, and how best to facilitate student teams.
Day 3-7: Student-Teams Educators facilitate their team of 5 students through the design thinking process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test) around a real-world problem with Leadership+Design facilitators, designers, and social entrepreneurs serving as mentors throughout. On the final day, student teams present their ideas to a panel of judges for real-world feedback.
Day 7.5: Reflection & Innovation Project Educators reflect on their experience with students and work as a cohort to bring an innovation project back to their school.
Connect Summer To Your School Year
Meaningful teacher learning should always include the opportunity for reflection and application. After the students leave, teachers reflect on the experience and identify lessons learned. More importantly, we'll help you develop an innovation project to bring this learning back to your school. 3 cohort meetings, schedule throughout the following school year, will keep you connected with your cohort and let you share lessons learned.
Cohort follow-up for each program will be scheduled for October, January, and May, on Friday afternoons mutually agreeable to the cohort.
Tuition for Summer for Educators is $1999.00
Tuition includes all materials and food for the program, but it does not include any travel costs or lodging for out of town participants. Need-based financial aid is available; please tell us on your application if you'd like to request aid.
Educator ParticipationLeadership+Design Summer is intended for a small cohort of teacher-leaders who are leading innovation or design initiatives in their respective schools. If that sounds like you, please fill out an application below!

L+D Summer is not designed to support more than one teacher from an individual school. If you would like to train a team of teachers from your school, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for information about school programs, which are available all year round. Check out our L+D Bootcamps as well.
We also have worked with schools including Sonoma Country Day School, St. Martin's Episcopal School, Presbyterian Day School, Center for Early Education, University Prep, and Catlin Gabel School to create custom, high-touch design experiences that suit the needs of their teams.
