How might we reimagine the admissions process to better meet the needs of families?
During the summer of 2016, Leadership+Design spent two days with a group of curious admissions staff, administrators, faculty, and parents at Steward School, a JK-12 day school in Richmond, VA, to creatively explore new approaches to their admissions process. Admissions staff did some empathy research before the arrival of the L+D team, interviewing parents and students and gathering their stories. The team then retreated to the school's fabulous new Bryan Innovation Lab to learn the habits and mindsets of designers and practice these new skills as they imagined novel approaches to three moments in the admissions cycle: the campus visit/open house, the space between visits, and the "yield time" when prospective students make their decisions. The two days of team-building and designing resulted in the development of nine prototypes of ideas that the admissions staff will further refine and implement as they continue their work to promote the school.
