Should we do a survey for the whole community?
This is the wrong question. What schools should be asking is: How might a year of planning lead to new learning, more human-connection and equal parts inspiration, introspection and future-casting to a desired outcome where the school is full and the community is engaged in work that matters?
After asking the question above, does a survey still seem like a good idea? Don't get us wrong. We like data - both qualitative and quantitative. But great strategic plans are part of a larger narrative that SWOTs and surveys rarely reveal. L+D's process invites schools to go deeper and balance the tension between Mission and Market.
Visit #1 - Get Curious: Through a curated empathy research phase, the team will look at the future context and dive into learning in the school community.
Visit #2 - Clarify: In this visit, the team will begin to unpack their learning, research and make sense of the data.
Visit #3/4 - Crowdsource: In this visit and a follow-up Community Design Day, the team will share their work with the community and widen the lens. This chance to engage with the wider community builds thinking, community and is memorable.
Visit #4/5 - Conceptualize and Construct: In this phase, the team will be building prototypes. What have we learned and how might it translate into strategic priorities that we can use to create a plan?
Visit #6 - Communicate: Share the work, share the inspiration, bring the plan alive and take action.
Active, Creative and Energizing is how it should feel
Through an intentional, engaging process rooted in human-centered design, a diverse and interdisciplinary design team from your school will spend 6 months to a year learning, connecting and developing a strategic plan with three foundational outcomes:
-------------An Inspiring Plan-------------
Strategic plans should be the next chapter in your school's unique journey.
All schools have a story - a unique and compelling history. Strategic planning processes look backward first, connect the through-lines, values, culture and significant events before charting a course for the future.
At Leadership+Design we love to work with schools on getting ready for the planning process, clarifying mission, values, and culture. We love the planning process of determining human needs and finding ways to meet them with innovative solutions. And finally, we love to work with schools on executing those solutions.
